Microwave Quadrupoles for Beam Break-up Supression In the NLC Main Linac

چکیده
This is a preliminary study of the effect of using microwave quads (MQs) instead of rf phase shifting to induce BNS damping in the main linac of the NLC collider. We consider MQs running at X-band, and find that the total length of MQs needed for the NLC is 6% of the total length of the accelerating structures. We show through simulations that, by using MQs instead of phase shifting for BNS damping, the quad alignment tolerances can be relaxed but at the expense of shifting the tight tolerances to the MQs; this can be advantageous if the MQs can be better aligned than the quads. For the design final energy spread in the NLC of 0.3%, the quad tolerances are loosened by a factor of 2-3 when using MQs. These tolerances can be loosened by an additional factor of 1.5, but at the cost of 1.7% in energy overhead. متن کامل0 Estimates of Dispersive Effects in a Bent NLC Main Linac ∗
An alternative being considered for the Next Linear Col-lider (NLC) is not to tunnel in a straight line but to bend the Main Linac into an arc so as to follow an equipotential. We begin here an examination of the effects that this would have on vertical dispersion, with its attendant consequences on synchrotron radiation and emittance growth by looking at two scenarios: a gentle continuous bend...

متن کاملBeam-Based Alignment of the NLC Main Linac, Part One: Single-Bunch Comparative Study of Three Algorithms
We describe the results of a series of simulation studies of beam-based alignment of the NLC main linacs using the program LIAR. Three algorithms for alignment of quadrupoles and girders are considered: the algorithm used in the ZDR, the ZDR algorithm combined with a post-alignment MICADO operation, and an algorithm which requires no steering dipoles but requires twice as many alignment segment...
متن کاملEffect of Cooling Water on Stability of NLC Linac Components
Vertical vibration of linac components (accelerating structures, girders and quadrupoles) in the NLC has been studied experimentally and analytically. Effects such as structural resonances and vibration caused by cooling water both in accelerating structures and quadrupoles have been considered. Experimental data has been compared with analytical predictions and simulations using ANSYS. A desig...
